Using period records and images, Steve Ward restores Black and other ethnic performers to their central place in nineteenth-century circus history, examining their achievements alongside the prejudice and exploitation they faced. Ward holds a PhD in social history, co-founded Leeds Children’s Circus and has written extensively about the social and cultural history of circus.
